Sometimes a name arrives long before we fully understand why it feels right.
That was the case with Sotto.
While exploring ideas for my studio, I came across the word sotto. In Italian it means beneath. In Japanese it can mean gently, softly or quietly. The more I sat with those meanings, the more they felt connected to the things I working towards creating.
To me, sotto speaks to what exists beneath the surface.
The thoughts we carry.
The memories that shape us.
The questions we continue to explore.
The quiet parts of ourselves that often go unseen.
In a world that often encourages us to move quickly, consume quickly and speak loudly, I find myself increasingly drawn towards the opposite.
Towards slowness... towards obersvations... towards creating intention...
Pottery, weaving and writing all invite me into that space. They ask me to slow down, to pay attention and to accept that not everything needs to be rushed towards an outcome.
Sotto Studio was created as a place to explore those ideas.
A place where objects are made slowly.
Where imperfections are welcomed.
Where beauty is found not in perfection, but in character, texture and story.
The name felt less like something I chose and more like something I discovered.
A quiet reminder to look a little deeper and notice what lies beneath the surface.
